Increasing ground clearance with standard HR-V parts

The story is this: In 1997 a Swedish car magazine rolled a Mercedes A-class in what was intended to be an accident-avoidance test, commonly dubbed the "moose test". Shortly after the HR-V was introduced in 1999 it also tipped over in this infamous test. As an immediate counter-measure Honda decided to lower the car (from 195mm to 175 mm ground clearance). To not lose market share Honda decided not to wait with this modification until the first face-lift of the HR-V in 2001, they rather introduced this change somewhen in the year 2000.

Unfortunately, I don't know how exactly the 2 cm lowering was achieved. My bet would be by using different springs.

In principle, it should then be possible to increase the ground clearance of a recent HR-V simply by replacing the springs by pre-2000 ones which should be available from your friendly Honda dealer next door.

Has anybody tried that?

That's the conclusion I came to.

Try your local Honda wreckers first.

You can also increase ground clearance by increasing tyre size. I have 205/70-15 which added approx. 1cm.
