interesting approach towards engine break in
there's a mechanic claiming that running the engine hard during break in period actually does good: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm don't take it as the cosmic truth, just an alternative and interesting point of view. I have to admit I red-lined mine a few times in the first week. It's now at 85,000 miles and runs better than most If the easy break in period was so important. all hire cars would be wrecks. Hi all, Must agree If you want a fast reliably motor; drive it hard from day one. Modern day engines are dyno test before fitment into chassis, hence no need for break-in period. The method of running in / break-in period for an engine is old hat. Note: car manufactures actually recommend driving the car as normal from day one, to prevent light loading on the engine, which actually has an adverse effect / result of glassing the cylinder bores. happy CR-Ving I don't advocate this, but my BIL is an ASE mechanic and his philosophy is to "drive it like you stole it, If you're going to break something - make sure it's under warrantee". I've driven every car i've owned like it was stolen, the only damage has been to my licence! Each car was around 15% faster at the end if its time with me than it was before i bought it. The HRV has been given death since day one and it's as sweet as a nut, all i do is top up the oil once a month and that's about it. Funny that..... a freind of mine once described my driving like that. I guess it comes from a childhood of kart racing. 3 years, 85,000 miles. no faults, I guess it can't be all that bad then. And still on the original brake pads!!! (I don't know how I've managed that one???) It's a bit costly on front tyres tho'. They always seem to wear the outer shoulder. the tyre wear chart says slow down..... Fat chance of that!!!! heh - i get the tyres for about 65 quid each now. Dunlop SP300s give good grip in wet or dry and don't rumble too much at speed. I've got 18,000 miles out of the fronts which isn't bad given the way i drive, wear is uniform on mine though. Brakes have been changed twice on pads and once for the discs - they take a good hammering too :) I have to say the HR-V handles just like a kart and the temptation is to wring its neck and screw it around any corner you come across, glad to see it's not just me then !! |
