Carbon fibre hoodbonnet
Any idea the cost range on average/estimate for custom made carbon fibre hoods/bonnets in the US? Are there any regulations in the US in regards to replacing these on cars? I'm talking about actual carbon fibre not carbon fibre lamination :) Any fans of carbon fibre hoods here? I'm also wondering if there are any side effects in terms of safety or the car's integrity in putting on carbon fibre hoods? A former member, Paul_arbouw, had a carbon fibre hood made for his 2nd Gen CR-V. From his posts, he spent several thousand dollars in design work with a custom shop before getting the first prototype. He goal was to eventually market a version for about $800, but he never got past the single hood. Unless you can find someone that will foot the design bill, or has already started the design process, I think it's going to be more expensive then it's worth. :) I'm gathering a list of interested parties in my forum to see if there's a demand for it. Was advised by a shop in the carbon fibre business that they would be happy to custom make a CF hood (from Japan) if there's at least 10 orders. They mentioned they can custom make with vents/scoop on it too. They estimate that it will cost about US$830-970 max (after conversion). I would imagine if there weren't any takers at $800 for Paul's CF hood for the G2 then I don't think there would be anyone interested when there's shipping costs to factor in. Unless of course there is a significant number or orders to lower the costs but I don't believe many would catch up on this mod. I'm thinking the weight reduction from CF hoods wouldn't really be significant enough compared to the overall weight of the car, it's more for the looks first then weight second. Or am I wrong? I think you're correct. :) |
