Setting the distributor in a reman 258

Hey folks, I've been trying to read up on how to set in this distributor and for some reason I just can't figure it out. Would someone be kind enough to put into layman terms exactly how to do this?

Then after I do get it in, how do I know where each plug goes onto the cap? This entire process is confusing the hell out of me. :)

Thanks guys,
most all your inline six cylinder engines fire 153624. so it doesn't matter exactly where you instal the distributer, just make sure the the number one cylinder is at TDC (top dead center) and install the plug wires in that order, in the same direction the rotor is turning, from there you can adjust the distributer by turning slightly to advance or retard the spark to get your *suggested* 8 degrees before tdc, I have seen them run all the way up to 14 degrees btdc, but you will have to play with it to get it just right, it all hinges on your setup, as to where your rig will run the best.

Good luck and let us know your results

Tom
TRY THIS, Cause it sounds like you're CONFUSED:thumbsup:
take out #1 spark plug
push a rag in the hole with a screwdriver so it fits snugly
keep BUMPING the starter till the rag pops out
IT WILL POP, Then youre at TDC compression stroke
Set dist with the vacuum assmbly pointing to front grill of jeep
look at where rotor is pointing in relation to dist cap by removing and replacing cap
That will be # 1
Then run remaining plug wires in a clockwise direction around cap
EX: #1- 5-3-6-2-4
To the spark plugs.
I'LL try to post a couple pics so you'll get it :2thumbsup:
OOPS I CANT POST I DONT THINK.

You need 30 days membership and 50 technical forum posts to be able to post pictures. If you post the links, most people will make them work for you by quoting your post.
I just viewed yer pics looks like its comming along nicely, have fun.:D
Stock the distributor is clocked with the vacuum advance pot facing the front of the Jeep. This way your timing has lots of adjusting room.

To continue stock, you need to put the rotor in so when it seats down it is pointing to about 5:00 to 6:00 with the block being 12:00 with the crankshaft timing mark on 0. Then plug #1 goes into the post it is pointing at with the timing mark on 0. This makes the stock wire sets fit right.

This will be top dead center of either 1 or 6. To be 'sure' it is TDC of # 1, you put your finger over #1 spark plug hole as you turn the crank with a socket wrench to the timing mark. If it is the correct revolution, you will easily feel the compression under your finger. If no compression, you are on the exhaust stroke so you turn the crank once more revolution around and this time, compression should be there.
Thanks for the heads up. I guess I'll have to wait till I get 50 posts cause I don't have any url to link to and I'm 56 years old an not that computer savvy anyway, kinda confusin for me.
Thanks again.
Thanks everyone for all the info! I am going to try this tonight and see how it goes!

I also just put in a newly rebuilt mc2100, so hopefully all goes well because if it won't fire I'm not going to know whether I screwed up with the distributor or the carb isn't working properly. ;p

Thanks again!
