Trouble shifting into gear

Hey everyone, I just bolted my tranny (t176) and transfer case up (d300). I also just adjusted the clutch linkage so it met the fork. Then I put the shifter stick in.

I just tried to shift into a gear and for some reason it just won't let me. (The jeep is not running.. needs distributor and a few other things first, this shouldn't matter however?)

Did I do something wrong here? I was pretty careful the whole way.. am I missing something extra stupid cause it is late and that is possible?

Thanks folks.
I know it sounds dumb, but are you sure the trans was in neutral when you took the shifter out? If the shifter is in the wrong place, that will happen. It should not matter that the engine is not running.
Actually I am not sure iof it was in neutral or not.. it took me a couple minutes to figure out how to get the shifter out so I was just flaring it all around.. if it wasn't in neutral, what are my options?
Well I just figured out that it is in gear. When I put the transfer case in 2wd I cannot rock the jeep back and forth. When I put the tcase in neutral, it rolls just fine.

I'm not sure which gear I'm in, does it matter? How do I fix this? Grrr.. damn stupid problems just won't stop.
Look down into the trans and it should be obvious where the shifter has to go, you will see what rail is not centered. If that doesn't work or you can't see, you could always take off the top cover and slide it out of gear by hand, but you should be able to see what you have to do by looking down into it. Don't feel bad, I did the same thing with my T18.
Ah there we go.. I got it. You were right, when I stuck my head down that shaft I could see where it needed to be, and a light *tick* and it dropped into neutral. Put that cover back on, and it shifts perfectly. Thanks a lot for the help, I've been at it so long tonight that I don't think I would have gotten that.
No B's,

I have not heard about the tip you posted here. Its one I will log into the memory banks.

Thanks......
