Where can I buy new rack and pinion for my key cylinder/ignition switch?
76 CJ7 Being so frustrated I almost broke my Jeep's windshield, I dropped my Jeep off at the mechanic to see if he could fix my Jeep's starting problem. He called and said that what I believe is the pinion is "broken." Regardless, I have that small, round piece of white plastic that has gears on it in my hand. I called Qtec, and they said they don't sell them. Can I buy this part by itself? If so, where? http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/4/2/27/f_rackm_32a62c1.jpg Pic credit to John Strenk Well windshields are close to 120 w/o shipping so good move, IMO, You are going to have to find a used steering column to replace it all together. I do not think that part is available, but if you bring it to qa GM dealer, they might be able to figure it out. The cylinder needs to be fixed and it might be cheaper to buy a used column and replace yours for downtime. John probably can figure this out if the part is available or interchangeable with newer model. same thing broke on mine while it was in the garage for a state inspection. They were able to hunt down the piece, but it took awhile. For what its worth, it broke again about a week later. So I picked up a rebuilt column on ebay that I'm planning to put in the next nice day I have off Paging John Strenk. I actually broke my rack when I was rebuilding my column. Went to the junkyard, found a chevy truck with the same type of column and got a new one. It was a pain, but it only cost like a dollar. Since the CJ columns were basically GM columns with some AMC personalizing, you can probably do as suggested and hit the U-Pick yards and pull a column (or the part). However: Call you local locksmiths and see if they do ignition repairs. Edit: If you wind up empty handed, send me a PM...I've got my original (non-tilt) CJ column sitting on a shelf in my basement. I can probably part it out, or ship it to ya whole.... This what ya need? http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/HackFabrication/PinionGear1.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/HackFabrication/PinionGear2.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/HackFabrication/PinionGear3.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/HackFabrication/PinionGear4.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/HackFabrication/PinionGear5.jpg Or do you need this?: http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/HackFabrication/IgnitionLockRack002.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/HackFabrication/IgnitionLockRack001.jpg That's awesome, Hack. PMing now. I have a tilt steering, but I had to replace mine twice. First time I found it hanging on the rack at Napa. Next time hanging on the rack in Orielly's in the help section. Its was a GM part. By the way, the second time I replaced the ignition switch also. Since then I haven't had any problems with braking it for 6 years now. Also, if you ask for it at the parts house they will say they can't get it. At least that is what they told me both times and it was hanging on the rack. At least not the one I removed from my 1976 CJ. The CJ gear has a very small opening in it. I would guesstimate around 1/32". |
