Engine knock
My motor saga continues. I have a 258 that I just had rebuilt. The shop that rebuilt it turned out to be a bunch of *******es. Anyways, I've got about 500 miles on the motor and when I first start it up, it clacks and then after warm up goes into low mild knock. Going out right now to pick up a mechanical oil pressure gauge because this electrical is all over the place. I was wonder if anyone had any ideas on trouble shooting aside from changing out the sending unit, oil pump and so on. One thing I want to mention that blew my mind is these guys originally put in a electrical fuel pump cam shaft. Of course I had them put in the proper one after seeing what they did, but I'm wonder if that could have initially caused some internal damage. Thanks for reading this rant, any advice is more than appreciated. I doubt that the electric fuel pum cam shaft could cause the issue, but it does lead me to wonder if they used other wrong parts and also makes me wonder if they even bothered to plastigauge or mic the crank Bad clearances could cause all your symptoms I guess I'm gettin' old, can't keep up. What is "electrical fuel pump cam shaft"? Years ago, we used to have problems with folks forgetting to replace their blinker fluid. In fact the whole thing got so out of hand that they had to switch to "electrical" blinkers! maybe my terminology is wrong, but what I mean to say is the camshaft they put in did not have the lobes to activate the fuel pump lever. Ouch. For the clack on starts, check the oil filter. There are a bunch of 'bad' Fram filters out there with no drainback valve in them that cause cold start noise and 0 oil pressure on start. An automotive stethoscope can really narrow down the knock noises. One person I met online had a strange knock(s) after a rebuild. Turns out he lived right around the corner and came over. Well the stethoscope said every rod was knocking to some degree so he drove it a bit more until the timing chain gear blew apart and when we opened it, not 'one' connecting rod cap was on the correct rod. They were even numbered and the 'rebuilder' missed! Same for the mains, 3 out of 7 were right. It was amazing it ran. We put it back together right with new bearings and a turn, 'and' an oil slinger and it purrs now. Thanks Mike. I guess I'll change out the oil filter when I install the mechanical gauge today. If need be, I'll be changing out the oil pump as well. The mild knock after warm up is what getting me though. I'm going to steth it tonight, but it can be so dam hard to pin point a knock that like. I looked all over for a number and didn't see one... it looked like some numbers on the rod itself, but it mainly resembles a E and 3 on all of them... http://www.certifiablejeep.com/images/freejeep/page46/large/168_6838.jpg cb Out of curiousity, where was the rod numbered? These were all stamped on there, likely by someone who took it apart, but every one I have opened, up here in Canada has had it. That is 2 CJ's and 2 YJ's. O.k. went home last night after going to the parts store and getting a mechanical oil guage, filter, oil, ect. After installing the new guage, same exact thing no oil pressure at start up and then it slowly moved up to about 20 psi. Still had the tick clicking sound at start up followed by a mild knock after warm up. So I dropped the pan, (without removing the engine mount which I will never do again) changed out the oil pump, and bolted it back up. Fired the rig back up and wham psi up to 65 psi at start up, with no tickin', clickin', knockin'. Mind you, this is a new rebuild with about 500 miles on it. I would suggest to anyone who doesn't have a mechanical guage in to do so. Hope this thread can help someone out one day. Thanks for the follow up. I think I would have given all the rod ends a good shake while I was in there as well as a quick torque check on their bolts. That knock wasn't a good thing, something has to have play for it to happen. Congrats...it coulda been bad I did feel for loose caps and rods and found nothing. And did check torque on bolts aswell. Everthing looked good. I'm still not sure what was knocking, aside from low oil pressure due to a falty oil pump. But she does purrr like a kitten now. Not to jump thread here, but I also did the motorcraft 2100 carb upgrade recently with the help of many threads from people on this board. What a difference. Im not that big of a motor head but I found the carb in a junk yard, rebuilt it and installed it. What an amazing upgrade for this IL6. Just want to say thanks to everyone for the help along the way with this rebuild. I did feel for loose caps and rods and found nothing. And did check torque on bolts aswell. Everthing looked good. Here is a pic of the rod caps for anyone who wants to see where the numbers were... saved me some headaches, I had 2 of the pistons out of order... http://www.certifiablejeep.com/images/freejeep/page47/large/168_6892.jpg cb Here is a pic of the rod caps for anyone who wants to see where the numbers were... saved me some headaches, I had 2 of the pistons out of order... http://www.certifiablejeep.com/images/freejeep/page47/large/168_6892.jpg cb Those have been on all the ones I pulled apart. |
