Ran Outta Gas Tonight.......Need Help On Fuel Gauge.
This is the 2nd time this has happened since I bought the Jeep 3 years ago. I really need to get the Speedo/Temp/Fuel gauge replaced since none of them work within the one module? Any ideas on why all the gauges on the speedo don't work? They're broken? Know your mileage per tank, better than a fuel guage. Here is how you can do a quick check : Quick gauge Check (http://users.adelphia.net/~john.strenk/Gauge%20web%20page/CJSpeedometerGaugeQuickTest.htm) Here is a little more detail: Basic Troubleshooting (http://users.adelphia.net/~john.strenk/Gauge%20web%20page/basic_troubleshooting_for_cj_gau.htm) Some Specification on the gauges: Gauge Specification (http://users.adelphia.net/~john.strenk/Gauge%20web%20page/QuickFacts.htm) One More Page More Facts (http://home.roadrunner.com/~john.strenk/Gauge%20web%20page/WebPageGauges1.htm) The Speedometer could be your cable or just the gauge. Crawl under your jeep and check it. The temp and fuel could be 1 of 3 things. 1. Both could be the sending units. 2. The gauges or 3. No power is getting to your fuel gauge and that is causing both gauges not to work. I suggest going to an autoparts store and buying one of those testor lights that looks like a screwdriver with a cord attached and start testing your wires. When I first got my jeep I had to replace the Speedometer cable and both sending units. Speedometer started working but the other two gauges didn't. After using one of those testor lights I found out that my fuel gauge wasn't getting any power from the fuse box. It's grounded out somewhere and I'm currently trying to find it. So I just rigged the guage up to where it works for now. All Jeeps have problems with the fuel guages. The only way to get the fuel guage right is to remove and clean the tank and replace the fuel sending unit. my fuel guage doesn't work either. everytime i fill up i have a notebook i write the mileage down, and figure on about 10 MPG at worst, 12 MPG at best. With about a 12 gallon tank, i figure i can go around 100 miles (give or take 10 miles) and when i get close to the magic number i head for the gas station. i have a pretty hi tech way of checking my fuel level. If I think i am getting low, I hit the brakes hard at a stop light or sign and listen to the gas slosh back and forth under me(I am guessing that your tank is behind you though) Another method is that i have a piece if coat hanger wire, when I am driving the jeep, first thing I do is open up the gas cap and shove that wire down there. Both CJ's I have owned in the past year have had bad sending units for the gas gauge. It has already been mentioned a couple of times, but the thing that seems to work best for me is to just fill up before I plan to do much of anything. That, or I write down my mileage then just make an estimate of how fare it will last me. Plus I always make sure to carry a couple of extra gallons in a gas can in the back. I also have a pretty high tech way of determining my gas level... My needle is always slammed up to the pin at "F" when I am driving, so when I want to check my gas, I smack the gauge to unstick the needle, and if it wobbles around like crazy after that, it means I need gas pronto. The coat hanger wire shoved into the fuel tank worries me a little. One little spark... I put a new sending unit on last year and it worked for about 3 weeks. I suspected a hole in the float. Here's what I found. http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa48/afmomto2/P1000553.jpg You can see the gas is all the way to the top of the "plastic" float in the foreground. I ordered a brass float like this one. My gas gauge didn't work when I bought the CJ7. I ran out of gas about 1 mile from the PO's house. After that I carry a couple of gallons behind the rear seat. Also, I have a old GPS mounted on the dash and I reset it to "0" every time I fill up. Usually get gas when I am in a nearby town that is always at least 10 cents lower. New sending unit fixed my "broken fuel gauge"! Has worked ever since getting replaced. Or, sure, you can track it by the miles per gallon. I put a new sending unit on last year and it worked for about 3 weeks. I suspected a hole in the float. Here's what I found. Awww crap man! I just replaced my sending unit and it isn't working either and now I think I know why. One of the first things I did when I bought my CJ was replace the sending unit. If it's original you're probably going to want to do it anyway since the tabs on the top (that the lines connect to) tend to rust away and fall apart.. gonna get you stranded one day after a bump shakes it all loose. |
