I have a 83 CJ7 with an I6 and the T5, I need a new Tranny, would an 79 T18 be a good candidate and what all would I be looking at swapping? Thanks in advance!
The problem with the T18, is that it's factory mated to the Dana 20 transfer case. While your T5 mates to the Dana 300. If you can get all the 'stuff': Bellhousing, trans, tcase, skidplate, driveshafts, etc. And don't mind the 2.0:1 low range of the Dana 20, then it's a pretty straight forward swap. Oh, the trans hump cover will need to be reworked.

Better idea? Get a T176/Dana300 combo. It was offered as an optional trans in the 1983 CJ's. Not the granny low, but a good trans none the less.
