Was the only V8 offered by Jeep off the showroom a 304? Or did they actually come with a 360/401 too?
The only factory V-8 offered to the public in the CJ's was the 304. That said, AMC did some odd things we've heard. Plus, some dealers built some "special editions" with other motors.
There were a very select few that came with 401s, but I don't know if it was factory or a dealer special.
I have a buddy in CA that says his CJ7 has a 401 in it. I always thought he simply didn't know what he was talking about.
THe only factory offered option was supposedly the 304 as said. But AMC would do some quirky things if they were asked to, including V8 scramblers?
I would tend to believe that if a CJ had a 401 in it, someone other than the factory put it in there.
I know that 304's came in CJ's, I've seen then stock firsthand. And I've been told that 360's came stock too. Not sure about a 401. What other AMC trucks did they come in?

the 304's were the only (V8) things in CJ's when they left the factory (of the 304-360-401 type motors, that is).

Could they have left the dealership with something else? with enough money, I suppose almost anything is a possibility.

Agree, off the line the biggest V-8 was a 304, dealerships on the otherhand would cater to the demand of swapping in a 360 or 401 in the CJ's.

So, technically, if a special order thru a dealer requesting this change is possible, it would be like driving off a show room floor with the bigger V-8's.

Reason I say this is a guy up here has one with a 401 in it and his grandfather has had it since new, passed down thru generations.
