Next-Generation Ford Ranger: Ford 4-Trac Concept
This leads me to believe this is the next-generation Ranger for a few reasons. For one, I've gotten the impression from Ford that not only will the next generation Ranger grow a little in size (for a little more interior room, as well as to share a platform with the Explorer, etc...). Secondly, it's been thrown around that the next Ranger will be a 'world truck' for all markets. Obviously, the 4-door crewcab will not make it here (due to redundency with the Sport Trac), but I think the sheetmetal and general mechanics were given with this concept. An Explorer-based Ranger with the proportions and styling of this concept would be pretty much spot-on with what Ford needs to do. Throw on a heavy-duty solid rear-axle, the 2.3L and 3.5L Duratec engines (more specifically, a bored-out 3.5L Duratec mapped for torque), keep the prices within $1,000 of where they stand right now, and we're in business. Let's also not discount a very easily made mechanical twin to the upcoming SVT Sport Trac Adrenalin.

Huh? Let's look. 2006 Ridgeline: - 2006 Explorer (that this truck is based on)
Um, yeah. Ford sure copied the Ridgeline front for the Explorer based Ranger truck. (rolleyes)
And dave999, why do you think this Explorer based Ranger wouldn't meet those needs mentioned- of being long lasting tough, reliable? It would be an easy swap to put a solid rear axle on the truck - to lower price and help durability and serious off road ability. I actually think it is a good idea- since they already have a relatively proven platform to use in the Explorer, and the current Ranger really needs some added head room that the current platform won't allow without some serious changes (and the cab already looks tall and boxy compared to other competitor models). One thing to consider- platform sharing means lower price and probably better durability (by part sharing) at the expense of wieght. But I bet they can work on the weight part. 200)?200:this.scrollHeight); overflow: hidden;">
