Date: 12/8/2005 8:28:06 PM Author: Andrewsky I have a few problems with it.
1. The interior is too nice for an SUV. I'd worry about getting it dirty or scratching it.
2. It's heavily biased towards on-road capability.
3. It will be extremely expensive.
4. It has too many electronics; the reliability isn't proven.
If I was in the market for a Mercedes-Benz SUV, I'd get a used G500 and put some off-road modifications on it. |
1. Have you seen the price tag? People paying this much expect some luxury.
2. And you can tell this from the pictures? Unibodies can be made to perform quite well offroad; for example: the Touraeg does pretty damn good.
3. Why would DC produce a budget offroader and badge it as a Benz when they have the Jeep brand?
4. How can the reliability of any new product be proven? Yes, it is a Benz and they do have a bad reputation of late, but many of the electronics have already been debugged thanks to the ML so I don't think we will have very many problems.
But you aren't. I think Benz knows their prospective customer a little bit better than you do, and they designed this vehicle with those people in mind.

No, I haven't seen the price tag. I don't look for luxury in an SUV.
2. And you can tell this from the pictures?
Absolutely.

This is not a Touareg.
3. Why would DC produce a budget offroader and badge it as a Benz when they have the Jeep brand?
I'm not saying Benz is at fault for producing this. They'll make a lot of money. I'm just saying why I wouldn't buy it.
4. How can the reliability of any new product be proven? Yes, it is a Benz and they do have a bad reputation of late, but many of the electronics have already been debugged thanks to the ML so I don't think we will have very many problems.
Once again, I was simply expressing my point of view, not what I think the market will think of it.
But you aren't. I think Benz knows their prospective customer a little bit better than you do, and they designed this vehicle with those people in mind.
Where did I say this car is bad for Benz?

Your point of view doesn't matter here because you aren't a prospective customer. This is just like Raza saying there is no reason to get a Super V8 over a XJR because he doesn't need the legroom. Well, he isn't looking for a large luxury sedan so that is really irrelevant.
And, on second glance, the rear overhang is a tad long but I don't think it is any longer than its chief competitors, the Range Rover and the LX470.

Your point of view doesn't matter either, because your life takes up a few small coordinates in the space-time continuim.
So, in your opinion, my point of view doesn't matter when talking about Dodge Vipers? Or a Honda Accord? I'm not in the market for either of those. Does that mean I can't express my views without being harassed?

1. By your rules, neither of our opinions matter.
2. Did I say that the Range Rover and LX470 are good off road? No, I did not.

--------- I really have to tell you guys that mabye Acura Boy is a cow. Like maybe he is mostly black with white blots. Anyway, he likes martinis and so I decided to put valium in them so I can shove him in front of this new GL Benz. As for the car, I think it sucks compared to the range and land cruiser.

Maybe you should change your name from Benz Boy to something else...
How can you say "it sucks" when it hasn't even been compared yet!?

First, you had a good idea for your comeback, but it was poorly execute. Actually, I just don't like to give people much credit, you handled that quite well (give it 15 years and you might be Camiro's equal ). Anyhow, I think I failed to get my point across, the problem here is that you complained about things that are positives in the eyes of the GL's prospective market. Additionally, you need to sometimes look at the bigger picture and consider the manufacturer's strategy. Jeep already makes a bare to the bones offroader, why would MB degrade their brand image as well as steal sales from Jeep by doing the same? Ultimately, introducing the GL makes a lot of sense, they will basically be charging $15k more for a slightly longer ML.
