anyone have experience with toyota Rav4
I am looking into purchasing a small SUV. Has to get at least low 20's mpg. So far I have looked at a 2000 Kia Sportage 60k miles $6200 and a 1998 Toyota Rav4 with 70k for $6000. Anyone have experience with either of these vehicles or any other suggestions on what I should look at. The price must be around 6 or 7k as I do not want a car payment and that is all I have to spend. Thanks --------- I don't know what year Toyota gave he RAV4 the Camry 4cylinder engine, but that is the one to get if you get the Toyota. 2.4L rated at 160hp. The 2.0L is really weak. --------- Stay away from the KIA Sportage. Yes you will achieve over 20MPG, however to many quality control problems and poor enginering to list. If economy is your main concern and its only going to be used for city/highway driving you might want to also look into a Subaru. --------- Thanks for the info guys. From what I have heard here and on msn I think I will avoid the KIA, my first thoughts were "stay away" but I wanted others opinions. I have looked into a few subies, the only thing about them is they are pricey for what you get.(high miles)

The car based Rav should be a good vehicle. The old Sportage models are rather crude rear drive vehicles that are basicaly the same as the first Sportages of the early 90s. I assume you want an auto tranny? Hmmm. That means you can't look ate four banger Escapes and Tributes, since they just recently became available with an auto tranny (with the new 2.3 engine). You might check out the Pontiac Aztek. These are very good vehicles for the money, but the styling is a bit off putting. I have seen one of two 2001 Hyundai Sante Fes advertised with decent mileage for under $7k- and these are good solid comfortable vehicles. Those may have been manual tranny models though. If having a 4x4 drivetrain is a priority, you might check out some 98 and later Chevy Trackers (and the Suzuki Vitaras/Grand Vitaras). These are similar is design set up as the Sportage (rear drive platfrom), but are more modern in execution and performance. You might also look around for a 97 or 98 CR-V. Those first to model years were quite underpowered- especially with the auto tranny. They are very fuel efficient, but the slow performance means you can probably get a good deal on one- even though it is a usually over priced used Honda. 200)?200:this.scrollHeight); overflow: hidden;">

Well, then you might check out some of the early Escape and Tributes with manuals. They actually had 2.0 four banger 4x4 (and front drive only) models with manual trannies.
