I have a 1992 325is...and the exhaust is just too loud, one day it just started really screaming, before it was always just "kinda" loud. When the tips are covered it's extremely quiet, i.e. it's definitely not the engine making that excessive noise...

My question is if I just replace the muffler, not the whole exhaust system, is that going to kill the noise?

The thing is in great shape otherwise, I've been taking care of it but I was told the exhaust is fine (got a second opinion) just that it's 12 years old...

I had a magna flow system installed by a custom muffler shop. A few months later i got a ticket for a loud exhuast. THen they replaced the muffler with a catback only for 70 bucks and that made it quiet. Just take your car to a shop and put on a stock muffler should cost 85 dollars top.

It's really common for '92 325 mufflers to rust out on the inside, making them loud. You need a new cat-back exhaust, it's as simple as that.

thanks a bunch i was worried it'd be 250-300...been looking online, every place says a muffler's 225 and up. thanks though.

Another option is to pick up a used stock M3 exhaust, they bolt right up, flow a little better, have stainless steel tips and should be cheap and easy to find.
