I have a 97 540i and Im having some major problems. First off my transmission is making a strange high pitched sound. Its the same sound belts would make when they ware out but its louder. If the engine is reeved up to 1500rpm the noise stops until I stop reeving. Next is the big one. As soon as I start the car I get a big puff of white smoke comeing out of my tail pipe. The smoke comes out occasionaly when I accelerate, mostly when I accelerate hard. ANyone know what the problem is cause I could really use your help!!!!!???????

About the squealing - how do you know its the tranny and not a belt?
About the head gasket - do you have oily coolant or milky oil?

Or bubbles in the coolant when the car's running. Do you lose oil or coolant? Does the car seem low on power?

I think you will look at the oil ,, If some white in there its water !
And some problems with the headgasket .
Check out for oil in water also ?

Do you missing some coolant , or oil ?
If bigger problem with head gasket it will drink much of both !
And in case of gasketproblem the Engine got very hot !
