I just bought a 1992 525i. The guy I bought it from put synthetic oil in it before I bought it. I would drive it for about 30 miles and it would start making a audible tapping noise. It increases/decreases with more/less rpm's.
I tried 15W/40 hoping the thicker oil would help. Its back to the same symptoms. Is this a lifter problem? It has gone away too after banging away for awhile. Wouldn't a bad lifter make noise right off the start?

Do you know what your oil pressure is? I get lifter noise after really hard driving from oil not getting up high enough. Is this quiet ticking or loud knocking btw?

Thanks Lee... The noise is intermittant. I don't know what the oil pressure is. It comes and goes, but when its tapping it sounds bad.

Is there a test to determine if a lifter is bad?

try putting a gauge on the oil press. sending unit, you might have low oil pressure.
