I have a 1999 740i and need to know what is the best kind of oil to use. Supposedly, synthetic oil? And if I purchase it how much should I buy? And if I take it to a garage for an oil change will they give me better deal because I brought the oil?

Buy 2 things. An oil filter insert kit for your model/year 740i (see link below) and 8 quarts of oil. BMW High Performance 5W-30 is fine and it is a synthetic oil produced by Castrol. I don't imagine you're racing your super 7, but if you are...right on! Both can be picked up from the parts counter at any BMW dealership for around $10.00 for the filter insert kit and $4-5/quart for the oil. If you are a BMWCCA member, most dealerships will give you a discount on top of that (10%-15%). Once you've obtained those find a reputable independent BMW mechanic to change the oil for you if you are not comfortable doing so yourself. The dealership will probably charge more than you can probably find elsewhere for the work. There's also a link below that's a good resource for information on your 740i and its M62 engine.
