Where does the water drain to....

Hello everyone

I left the sunroof in the tilt open position while there was heavy rain fall. I check the interior and it is still dry. Where does the rain water drain to when the sunroof is in the tilt position (with the rear open in relation to the front)? Should I be concern with rust? Did the water get trapped inside the roof (where the sunroof goes when you completely open it)? How do I find out if anything was compromise?

Or is there an interior drain tube that re-routes the incoming water?

Thanks

That's a great question...free bump!

In most cars there's a drain tube that runs down the A- and B-pillars to drain any water that gets in. If you look closely, even in the closed position, the sunroof doesn't completely seal. Water can still get in.

yeah listen to the guy with the HVAC problems. there are tubes on both a and b pillars connected to a collection tray under the sunroof. hey bungy, I left a reply on your post with the hvac issue

You mock my pain... :)

Question: Specifically, where are the sunroof drain holes on the E46 sedan? How many? Are there any drain holes towards the rear, or only the ones at the front (by the A-pillar)? Where does water drain to the rear?

Background: I had wet floorboard on passenger side seat after leaving the car outside for a couple hours during driving rain, on my fairly steep driveway. I haven't been able to replicate the leak at the car wash or on the driveway. I checked the door seals and inside of door, but no problems.

-- If there are only front drain holes. I think the driveway angle wouldn't let the water get to the front to drain out. With a lot of water in the sunroof tray, it must have just drained into the car. If so, it was a one-time thing, I won't worry about it.

-- Unless there are some rear-ward draining holes, which might be clogged up. If so, where are they and how do I clean them out?

Thanks, sorry for the long explanation. I checked the Bentley Manual, no help.

ok here is the low down.

There is a drain tube that goes to the back of the car under the roof (above the headliner) to the rear of the car and litterally under the rear window or under the quarter for some cars and it leads to the bottom of the car under the bumper.

Also, that mysterious leak inside the car that you could not duplicat, I have that same thing. I tore the carpet all up and lo and behold I found the problem. All cars have holes on the chasis. If the car ever gets flooded they are covered with plastic plugs that you can just pop out and drain the water. They are located in the bumper and throughout the body under the carpeting obviously. What you need to do is under the carpet and look for it. What happened to mine is the rubber throghout the years of heat and water deteriorated away. After the recent rash of heavy rain all the crosswalks especially in hilly neighborhoods were running wild with small streams down the sides, going to lower ground. As I would brake the car so as not to scratch the bumper or fracture the oil pan on the bumps or dips the stream would wet the entire bottom of the car. This in turn would cause the water to seep into the car and under the actual carpeting. I got around to drying my carpet and covering the open drain hole with ducti tape until I have the time to take the seats out and rip the carpet up again.

Also, These cars had a problem with water flooding the DME compartment. One of the symptoms is a wet passenger floor. You need to check the engine computer and make sure it isn't wet, or else, you aren't going to drive much further.

Is this the same as the e46? Because my mom's 2000 323i got a similar problem. All of a sudden, we noticed A LOT of water on the floor. We could not figure out how it got there. The carpet was soaked with water. We had to use towells to soak up the water.

most likely, one other note is to just get on the floor and check the undercarriage of the car. ALot of times, women drivers, no offense, such as the lady that owned my car previously have a tendency to jump the car off of curbs while exiting driveways. And the local gubers at tire shops try to jack the car on the inside soft belly of the car and tear through the sheet metal.

I had two big jack shaped holes when I first got my car and a huge gaping hole. Pounded them down and applied undercoat and sealant from the top.

But any, just get on all fours and check the undercarriage for tears, you might have to do some feeling around. Otherwise you may have forgotten the windows down.

The same problem just happened again. The carpet is soaked. There is almost standing water on the carpet. Are the little drain holes on the bottom of the car enough to flood the entire carpet (driver side, passenger side, front, and rear)? I will check under the car soon and see what I can find.

frist try to duplicate the problem. you will visually see the jack tears but not the rubber covers for the drain hols, they are actually hidden beneath the rails/frame of the car.
