I recently bought a '96 M3 with 60K miles. The clutch seems to engage pretty low. Is this adjustable or am I about due for a new clutch?

Clutch issues
The clutch isn't adjustable. Does it seem to slip at all? If not you probably just need to get use to the release point. It does not seem to slip at all. I had a 330 before this and am used to the high release point. This seems to be much lower than what I've exerienced before. I thought I read that as the clutch wears, the release point gets lower. Do you know if this is the case? Also, it seems difficult to get into gear sometimes. It does not seem to slip at all. I had a 330 before this and am used to the high release point. Also, it seems difficult to get into gear sometimes. I have a 330 and it does have a high release, I always thought it started off low and got higher as it wore? but maybe it depends on the car? is freeplay adjustable on that car? Does the car creep at all with your foot off the accelerator and the clutch fully depressed? AFAIK, the pedal height does not vary with clutch wear. The parts that move the pivot arm are hydraulic (i.e a clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, and a tube between). It is possible that you have some air in the system, but then repeatedly depressing the clutch pedal would increase the disengagement point. It is also possible that there is some leakage of the hydraulic fluid past the seals in the master or slave cylinders, but then you'd probably notice the leak and drop of fluid level in the reservoir. WHen I installed a LWFW and M3 clutch on the 323is, the pedal was noticeably lower. Everything was new, except the master cylinder, so I expect that this is normal. Anyway, I'd say if it works and doesn't leak of cause problems, then just get used to it. my 97 m3 also is low. |
