Listen to this ugly bottom-end noise

It's loudest at the exhaust side of the block around piston 3-4. You have to turn the volume up high, it's a faint recording (handheld recorder).

I can't imagine anything down there making such a drastic "thunka-thunka" sound. I've never heard motors with bad bottom ends to know the noises for various parts.

http://gentlelife.redirectme.net:60/thunka.wav Sound doesn't start for 3-4 seconds, please be patient.

What do you think?

no faults?

If its the bottom end then it could be the connecting rod bearings. Remove your oil filter and see if there are any metal shavings.

Faults as in fault codes? I don't have a reader thingy.

I just changed the oil today. The filter was clean as well as the oil coming out, at least from what my eyes can see.

It could be a rod or piston knocking. Both bad things. Immediate repairs required. The best thing to do right now would be to remove the oil pan and examine all the rod big ends.

This type of problem is not likely to throw a fault code. If anything possibly a knock sensor fault code.

John (PA)-

That sounded just like my car when it spun a rod bearing. I think thats what you may have done. This would be the time to build your engine if so.

I was hoping I could examine the bearings and possibly replace them just with the oil pan off. Maybe I'll get lucky. I was more afraid of it being at the other end of the rod or the rod itself. I certainly have no way to remove an engine, nor the tools to handle it, nor the money to pay someone at this time. :(

Thanks for your input.

that sounds like a rod bearing, but also it might be piston damage..see if you can barrow a boreascope to get down in thereand check the pistons and rings...

Another vote for the rod bearings

What is a boreascope?

A boerascope (sp?) is a fiber optic type scope that you can put down the spark plug hole and see what's going on inside the engine.

I see.. one of those could be very handy.

Anyone know if you can change rod bearings without pulling the motor?

A rod bearing is just a sleeve correct? To make a noise like that it must be "banging" on something else, hence further damage.
