Urgent: valve cover gasket question

I'm currently in the middle of replacing the valve cover gasket on my '94 325is. I took the valve cover off and was cleaning it up when I encountered the following and don't know what to do.

The silver paint has been peeling from the outside of the valve cover for a while in cetain spots, but I never thought it to be a problem besides being a little unattractive. However, when I removed the cover, I discovered that it seems to be painted on the edge where the gasket seals as well as on the outside and that some of that paint has come off as well.

So the question is, do I need to get all the paint off in order to get a good seal with the new gasket? Do I need to repaint it first? Am I a dumbass and that isn't actually paint but something else and in that case, what do I need to do?

I just don't want to put it back together and have it leak and have to do it all over again. Since my car is now in pieces in my garage, a fast response would be greatly appreciated if any of you out there can advise me on this.

Thanks a bunch,

Just scrape off what's loose and put it back together. It'll seal fine.
