Can i claim back payments on credit card insurance

Three years ago i was unemployed and had severe Depression for 2 years and anxiety attacks...Which i am over now but still find it hard to talk some times to people..and answer the phone.
(During my illness (i could not cope or handle anything) and had trouble speaking to people even answering the phone as i have mentioned. I was in a state of sleep you might call it?...eg:- NOT ON THIS PLANET.
I was paying my credit card every month and finding it hard at times except for one month i was late paying and got charged and had to pay double the amount that month....
My Question is i am still paying insurance what i do not need-and when i can pluck up the courage to talk on the phone i will cancel it...(Can i claim anything back for the unemployment and illness i had? as i was covered for this by the insurance...and as i was in state at the time i didnt notify them i was un-employed. My Doctor can confirm this and i also have papers to say i was unemployed and ill...for that time.
My husband can not do such things for me as he is NO good with anything to do with bills and is dyslexic....He once paid the council tax twice with-in two days! thats how good he is!!
If any one can help out there thanks!

I'd imagine that there are terms or clauses that specify timescales of when claims can/can't be made. That, in addition to payment protection insurance policies being notoriously difficult to claim against, would lead me to suggest that it's unlikely you'll have a successful claim.

However, you shouldn't just take my word for it. Nobody on here will really know as these things are dealt with on a case by case basis so the only way you can find out for definate is by checking with them.

If you're not comfortable talking on the phone why not write to them? Some companies will allow you to send them messages through their website after you've signed into your account, so you don't even have to pay the cost of the stamp etc.

Another route is reclaiming the cost of the payment protection insurance, this is only if it was missold though which may not be the case. Full details can be found here:

I think that most policies will only pay out for a maximum of 12 months if a successful claim is made, it'll all depend on your own policy though I guess. Although the way they're structured is that in those 12 months the balance will usually have been cleared (when there's no further spending).

Personally I wouldn't cancel the insurance until after you've spoken to them about possibly claiming, as I would have thought it would need to be active if you are to have any chance of it being successful. If they say no then cancel it straight away if you want to, this can be done by letter.

Hi there bef90
Many thanks for re-plying and the advice you have given me, i will certainly check everything you have mentioned..

I was begining to think that people on here were shallow"er than i first thought as lots of views but no reply- as people who have depression and who have suffered from it- always get a NO response as people are scared or bias to talking to people like me that have had such problems...You alone have proved me wrong as after many views you alone responded.
( There should be more help out there- as most people with mental problems do get in to debt) As this is what happend to me..And there is NO help given to them at all...One day maybe the people who have not had any problems will get the same treatment as they give out and then know what it feels like-and hopefully then it may lead to somthing being done" to help us all when we get into such problems..
Kind regards Shanouck

With regards to PPI, you needed to make a claim at the time you was ill in order for it to qualify. You cannot back date it. As for now, if you don't require it then give them a call to cancel it (shouldn't take any longer than about a minute and then might have to send some documentation out for you to sign).

No problem. I'd say that the lack of responses is more likely to be down to people not knowing rather than anything to do with the circumstances.

If you still have debts, which I presume so because of paying the payment protection, then the Debt Free Wannabe section of this forum is a good place to take a look at.

I don't go over there myself very often but on the occasions that I have there's been other people that are or have been in your situation, both debt wise and health wise.
