Home-Lost and Stolen

Lost and Stolen

I remember reading on the news letters or in one of the articles about buying things on your credit card because if they are lost or stolen you can reclaim the expenditure from your credit card company.

Now it might be a slight stretch for this, or I might be being silly not to be doing it I'm not sure, but I was hoping for some advice.

Last Saturday night the love of my love (well behind my wife of course) my Audi TT was stolen :-(
I have obviously spoken to the police and have started my insurance claim but we all know I'll not get any where near what the car was worth to me :-(

Now the reason for my dilema is this.

In the last 2 months I've had the breaks replaced (~250), electrics looked at (~300) and the clutch replaced (~1300) and the car was back to running like a dream

Would I have any chance of reclaiming these costs from my credit card company (Halifax) as I paid for them on my credit card. (I pay for everything on my Credit Card and pay off by DD to get my free 30 days credit:A )

What do you think? And if I have a chance how should I bring this up with my credit card company? Now or after my claim with the insurance company is complete?

You have...

no chance.

I have a Peugeot 206 that I am paying over 5 years for and have what I think is called a 'gap' insurance. So if I write it off it will cover the difference between what I owe and what the insurance company pays.

It's just one of those unfortunate things with the maintenance costs.

It is pretty unlikely they will cover you by way of a chargeback, through their disputes dept. this is because the merchant who sold you the parts has committed no fault (i.e. you recieved the product or service, it was not faulty and i'm guessing it was sold fairly!)

you may want to check if your account has purchase protection, as these policies are sometimes included with cards and they cover the accidental damage, theft or loss of goods for a set period following a purchase. It is unlikely you have it but there is certainly no harm in asking!

Just give them a ring and ask if you have such a policy on your card... if yes then make enquieries!

hope this helps

Also... sorry to hear about the car; a drunk driver crashed into mine a while ago and i was gutted  hope you get it sorted!

Thats mate.

P.S. It's a halifax one card if that makes any difference to peoples knowledge.
There is nothing worse than losing your car, it's a nightmare. Especially as I really loved this one, got it when I first got together with my now wife two and a half years ago and thought I'd have it until it was a rust bucket :-(

yep people dont understand the hurt! i only had mine for two months; the chap was speeding away from the police i think, really drunk and smashed my parked car into the middle of the road; total write off!
I've never dealt with halifax so it would be best to give them a ring!

i'm not ashamed to admit i felt like crying!

No. The credit card insurance is only applicable if no other insurance is in place. As you have car insurance covering the theft the cc company won't get involved.

I would tell your insurer of your recent spends and see if they value your car at the higher end of the TT band :)
