hi,
the business that work for has recently received a letter regarding to needing a secure code to accept the a maestro payment through are hsbc machine. Also recently we have been having to phone up to get a code to get the payment to go through, and that if we don't use a secure code we could be fined up to 13500 pound for taking a payment. other payment have been disabled according to the machine print out meaning we lost money and at the minute hsbc cannot tell us why this is.
do you know what is happening and what can you recommend?
regards sam

Surely this is something your employer should be sorting out
What sort of Maestro card are you talking about? If it's from Natwest they have introduced a new card reader that gives a secure code for transactions.
r u referring to MasterCard SecureCode which is used as an additional protection for online purchases?
never heard of this through the company I work for?
The only thing I can think of is the calls retailers have to make to an authorisation centre on "random" transactions.
As far as I'm aware they're applied to a certain % of all transactions by a retailer at random to ensure they're following the correct procedures. They can also triggered by unusual usage of a card which they believe may be fraud. The transaction in question might be perfectly normal (perhaps that is intended as a way of getting the right person to let them know quickly what's going on) but previous transactions might be unusual. I know one of our customers had had several hundred pounds taken earlier in the day when it set it off at our shop.
In the former it's usually a totally automated system where the retailer has to key in various details from the card and the transaction amount (not quite sure what it checks they're doing but anyway).
In the latter they usually ask to speak to the card holder and go through various security questions with them. It's a bit weird really as it also seems an ideal way for a staff member to set up a fraud by faking a call request as you've used most of the card details and gained answers to security questions.
Maestro Cards are not Credit Cards, try posting this in the correct section.;)

Are we talking about CNP transactions processed via a standalone terminal, i.e. Telephone / Mail Order? Internet orders must only be processed via the internet not manually via key pads.
HSBC have a 'plug in' for processing internet orders on the customer side, give them a call to ask, as you do seem confused in what you are asking or want.
All maestro online internet purchases will have to be via mastercard securecode soon, the change is industry wide and nothing to do with HSBC. Your employer needs to upgrade their website, or stop accepting maestro.HSBC can advise, I would suggest that it probably isn't your problem and something that your boss needs to sort out!
