Does anyone know if there are any outlets that will let you get cashback as you spend on a credit card, just like when u get 20 cashback while you buy a fiver's worth of graceries at Spar to save a trip to the cashpoint. There is a good reason why this is more beneficial to me than using my credit card at an atm just to withdraw cash.

Yoy may come across a corner shop which runs your card through as a sale and give you the cash for a service fee but this is a breach of the merchant's T&Cs

Cash-back cards would become VERY (more than they are now) appealing!

I have just been told elsewhere that hotels may offer this service for guests, is this possible? or also only on an "unofficial" basis?

Officially you should not get cashback with a Credit Card. Unofficially some smaller retailers and pub landlords flout the rules and have been known to give cashback on a Credit Card.
I have a local pub where I regularly get cashback on a Credit Card :beer:
Not usually as the merchant will be charged 1-4%
It has been known for merchants turn a blind eye if they make enough on the deal elsewhere, but this is a T&C breach..
Go for a meal with your mates
you pay the bill
your mates give you the cash
