Home-refund credit card purchase to debit card

refund credit card purchase to debit card

Hi,

If I make a purchase on a credit card and then change my mind and take it back to the shop does the refund have to go back onto the same credit card?

I ask because I am closing cancelling my credit card and am worried about how that would affect any purchases I have already made. I know I could hang onto the credit card for a some more weeks but it is a tempting time of year and I don't want to.

Can shops refund a credit card purchase onto a debit card? This would solve the problem entirely!

Cheers

Generally the refund does go back on the original card, although occasionally some retailers will make exceptions.

However, even if you cancel the card the refund should make its way back to you. There is some discussion on the thread below :

But if you think you may be seeking a refund, I think you would be well advised to keep the card open for a little longer.

You need to speak to them, usually it has to be the same card for security reasons.

Security reasons, and also the retailer won't get back their CC merchant fee otherwise... am I right?

I believe you are quite correct.
