Expired Barclaycard debited

I've just found out an insurance company has "automatically renewed" my policy and debited my Barclaycard agaist my wishes.

Whist I'm trying to arrange a refund from the insurance comany I've discovered that the card they had registered and have debited has in fact expired, it's the same card number but expired 08/08. Barclaycard have allowed the transaction. I got no sense from the muppet who I spoke to and am waiting for a supervisor to call me back to explain why it was authorised.

Surely this transaction should have been declined, help would be appreciated

Thanks.

If you do a search for 'continuous payment authority' on this forum, you should find the discussion on this.

I think you will have signed up to a continuous payment authority - like DD but for CC -the difference being is that that will continue until you cancel it with the company even if the card has expired or the account been closed.
Good luck sorting it all out.

Thanks for the help, it's a bit scary that this can be allowed, The insurance company has promised a refund though which is good.

Apparently they insert a small piece of text in all your insurance stuff saying "if we don't hear from you we reserve the right to automatically renew you using your card registered with us" So the onus is now on the customer to tell the company they don't want to buy or else they will automatically be sold the product , cheeky swines
