MBNA Abbey Credit Card late payment charge plus interest

I recently paid my Abbey Credit Card (MBNA) balance off in full but one day late.
I have been charged 12 late payment fee plus 75.83 interest charge.

I have contested this with a supervisor (Rory) at MBNA and he, after negotiation, has agreed to reeimburse me 50 off the interest change.

However, I'm still having to pay 12 late payment fee + 25.83 interst charge.

Is this reasonable? If not what can I do about it? Any advice welcomed.

Sorry but you knew the payment date and didn't pay on time.

IMHO they've done you a favour by knocking off the 50 and I'd be grateful and accept that if I was you

I've had exactly the same experience with MBNA last week as well.

Rang on Saturday to pay off the balance, but as the amount wouldn't be credited till Monday - I would be charged 12.00. Just for being 1 day late paying a 41.00 outstanding balance...

I'm trying the Reclaim Credit Card charges Template Letter - nothing to lose...

Cheers
Arno

Until maybe 18 months ago, MBNA used to give customers a days grace with their payment: it was still paid on time if it arrived not more than one day late. (but then, probably the people with their payments two days late, felt hard done by).

With all the re-claiming going on, MBNA have stopped giving that days grace. You dont need to be a technical whiz kid, to set up your computer to send you a reminder, that the payment has to go out on a certain date.

Late is late - if you miss the train by only 5 minutes, do you have a reason to complain?

The two of you, set up a DD, than this can never happen (unless there are insufficient funds in your account).

Hi.

We had the exact same situation this week i.e. hadn't set the direct debit up, realised on Friday that the statement date was Monday so made the payment straight away. It didn't clear in time and we were charged 12.

However, we phoned up on Tuesday and made a grovelling phone call. Prettty quickly we were refunded the 12. Therfore, my advice is to phone up, say your're sorry and if it's your first offence you might get it back. It helps to setup the direct debit before you do this (online) to give your argument some weight.

The thing with MBNA is this, unless you have the direct debit setup, the balance date is variable so it is easy to forget when it's due.
