I have been invited to apply for a 0% balance transfer card from the MBNA group (A&L). My partner already has a card from a different part on the MBNA group. Therefore I am wondering if I am likely to be accepted or not? I don't want a wasted search on my credit file.
What do you think?
Thanks
The fact that your partner already has an MBNA card shouldn't have a bearing on you getting an Alliance & Leicester card. You will have your own individual credit histories which will be assessed along with the application.
Just seen on Martin's Super Balance Transfer article it says...
Do you already have a Virgin, MBNA or Alliance & Leicester credit card?
If you do, sadly you'll already need to have an Egg Money (http://new.egg.com/visitor/0,,3_78868--View_1636,00.html) credit card (it's not accepting new customers at the moment though). lf you do, then jump to the Mule card (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/cut-loan-overdraft-costs#mule) section, which is much more complex. That's because all the cards that allow simple Super Balance Transfers are part of the MBNA group, and if you already have one you won't get a second.
If you don't have an MBNA card already, then simply read on...

Well you said that it was your partner that already had an MBNA card, that is different to you having one yourself.
Also, I don't like to contradict Martin, but I currently hold 3 MBNA cards all with healthy Credit Limits.

I have four! Two American Express, one Visa and one Mastercard. I used to have an Alliance & Leicester one as well, making five, but I cancelled that last year.
:D

Ive had an A+L card for 10 years, sucessfully applied for the MBNA Platinum card 2months ago, i applied online and had an answer and credit limit straight away.

Maybe the article should say you're unlikely to get another MBNA card then?
I wonder how some people manage to get away with it while others don't. Is it just MBNA's systems missing something when they're processing the CC application, or is there some other criteria that we're not aware of that means that some people are able to get multiple cards at once?
My original A+L card has a direct debit to pay it off in full every month, maybe because this one is paid off, is why im allowed another MBNA card?
Having dealt with people with 4+ MBNA based cards , it would be fair to say the above quite is abit off target. what may stop you getting a second card is that you would be overreaching yourself finacially

First of all, this article is discussing Super Balance Transfers which has absolutely nothing to do with owning more than one MBNA card.
And secondly, I think Martin has made a slight error in his wording in that it should read DON'T where I have highlighted the "DO" in red above as basically if you don't already own an MBNA group card then you would need to have the Egg Money card to enable a SBT.

However, I would make two suggestions to enhance that article...
1. The last sentence should read..."if you already have one you won't might not get a second, especially if you have a large credit limit and/or balance on the first one."
2. He doesn't mention the Egg Card (Visa), which is identical in SBT functionality to MBNA and doesn't require two applications, ie Egg Money plus a 0% BT card.
Martin's "wording" is correct Chameleon. :)
Ok, maybe I'm being thick here but in that case why would he say that you need an EM card as well as an MBNA group card to do a SBT?
ETA: Don't worry, I think I see my mistake now :o
I also need more :coffee: :D

Erm yes I know it is about super balance transfers (I have written that in my post ;) )
Regardless of the topic of the article (which could have been about all manner of credit card related stuff), as an aside, it clearly does state that you won't get two cards from the MBNA group.
I'm sorted now anyway. Didn't go for anything from MBNA in the end. :D
I can't believe I completely overlooked this bit ... are part of the MBNA group, and if you already have one you won't get a second
I am soooooo embarrassed now!!!!! :o
Please ignore everything I said as I was obviously on a different planet this morning! :rotfl:

My husband had a virgin card and this week got a MBNA Platinum 0% for 12 months and I read on here somewhere that you can transfer credit limits from one MBNA card to another so we rang up and did this old card had 16800 limit new card 6100 transferred 16000 to new card and now have card with 22100 limit leaving limit balance on virgin in case they make some good offers in the future and have transferred 20250 to Current Account at 0% for 12 months. I think someone said you can have up to 5 MBNA cards subject to credit rating and they don't seem to mind you having more than one.

Way to go
That is exactly why MBNA are a great lender if treated correctly.
And yes by all accounts you can have up to 5 MBNA cards. Nice One.
