Credit card fraud-how did someone get my details

I shop online lots and am concerned about the safety of using credit cards online.I was very surprised however this morning to get a letter regarding suspect transactions on a credit card I have NEVER used except for the initial balance transfer. The fraud dept guy I spoke to told me to just be carefull in future when using my card online and when I pointed out that the card had never been used at all except for the bt,never mind online,he said he would have to look into it further and get back to me,card blocked,no financial loss to myself he promised.
Over the last 5 days the card details have been used to purchase flights from easyjet, music downloads from napster and toys from harrods.
Aparantly the easyjet sale has been authorised but they will try to reverse that payment.Surely all they have to do is wait for the person who is boarding the plane and they have the thief?
I am shocked that the details of a card I have never even used have been used by someone else. What about all the extra security, the 3 digit code and the online password check, how did the transactions get through?
I am very concerned that this has happened and wonder if anyone has any idea how they got my info?

Who is going to wait for the thief to board the plane, baring in mind it's not a police matter? What if the person who uses the ticket is not the person who paid for them with your details?

I agree that it's very strange the card was never actually used, do you still get statements even though you don't use it? Have any letters gone missing?

Has your card been stolen? Has it ever been left where someone could see it without your knowing?

I'm in a similar situation with Barclaycard. I had a card I have not used in 18 months. I had been paying off the balance bit by bit and had just got it down to the last 100 when all of a sudden, someone in Florida mangaged to rack up 6,200. The card hasn't been out of my possession other than when its in my drawer over night or a locked gym locker. Yet someone either stole my details 18 months ago and waited that long to use them. Or someone within BC passed them on which is my suspision, as it is also very suspicious that the fraudster 'luckily' waited until there was the max available to spend before striking.

I firmly believe that the fraud originated from within Barclaycard.

My card was opened and used once for a 0% balance transfer over a year ago.I folded it in half basically destroying the card so I couldnt use it in shops and put it in the back of my purse where it has remained until today.
The credit card companies explanation of how my card was used by fraudsters is that it must have been a computer programme randomly generating numbers which just got lucky and came across mine.
I still dont understand how someone can make online transactions using just the card number without any of the other info which goes with it such as security codes, password,or even a linked name or address.
I think this must be someone in the credit card company either using or selling the details.I have heard of this happen with companies who use overseas call centres but this card company has a UK based centre.
Well at least they say I wont be out of pocket but I am still worried that it has happened at all.

From what you have said I would agree with you here. I would advise being very careful and vigilant with this provider in the future.

I am just going to close the account.I had zero balance anyway and was just keeping it as an available line of credit for emergencies.

Unfortunately these things to happen. I know of someone who handed in a card to the bank to be destroyed and a few months later noticed that the maximum cash amuont was being withdrawn from the account nearly every day from cash machines the local area. The total was nearly 3000 and the bank insisted that it was being withdrawn on the card that had been returned. the card was stopped and after investigation the majority of the cash was returned (the person involved does not like any fuss and hence never pushed for the full amount). So the returned card was never destroyed either accidently or deliberately.
