Egg card charging for payment being made but not by direct debit - Advice needed!

I received a letter from Egg today charging me a LATE FEE of 16 for not paying my card! This is despite the fact that I made a payment of 50 ON TIME. I phoned egg to ask them what was going on and they told me I had been charged for not making a payment BY DIRECT DEBIT. So although I made a payment on time because it wasn't by direct debit I've been charged. Is this legal? It seems unfair to me. Is there anything I can do?

I hope that makes sense. Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks!

What are the terms and conditions on your card?
Did the direct debit bounce?

presumably you made the payment 4 working days before the due date as per instructions

No, the 16 late fee wasn't because you didn't make payment by Direct Debit, but most likely because your payment wasn't credited on time.

How did you make the payment?

How many days before the due date was it made?

Does your statement indicate payment was received before the due date?
