Responsible for balance of Nursing home costs?

What is the name of your state? California My mother passed away a year ago leaving an unpaid balance of $3,000+ to the nursing home she resided. My father enrolled her and was responsible for all paper work and signatures filed. Now he's deceased and the nursing home's collection agency is after me, the eldest son. I've written them a letter stating that I have not taken on financial power of attorney or any of their financial responsibilities neither verbally nor written. And being a student, I can't afford to pay this debt. My parents left zilch, no estate, no money when they passed away. Am I legally responsible for this debt? Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |
