My father helped his ex wife to get a credit card in 1997 so she could establish credit. She moved to Georgia a couple years after that. My father received an email from this woman telling him that she had to use the credit card for hospital bills and could not afford to pay anything and may be able to pay after a law suit with her insurance company is settled. My father has no address or phone number to contact this woman and the credit card company merged with another company and the name changed so he has no idea what credit card she used. My father checked his credit report and there was only one joint account on it and the last time it had any activity on it was in 12/2000. But he doesnt recognize the name of the company and he is unable to contact the woman in Georgia to find out for sure what credit card she used. He has an email verifying that she solely has used the card. A lawyer has tried to contact him, he is on disability and social security and has no idea what the next step is. He dont want to contact them back because he dont want them to know that they have the right phone number and address and start hassling him. Is there any way for him to get out of this debt?
