gas leak

so i wake up this morning and the entire house smells like gasoline....i go to the garage and look under the car and there was about half a gallon of gasoline under the car and still dripping...anyone in here had a gas leak from the tank area before?......anyways the car is on her way to the shop...ill keep u guys posted on the whats and whys...
If its in front of the passenger side rear wheel, its likely the fuel pump hoses. Could also be the large collar nut that holds the fuel pumps in place or the gasket around the fuel pump opening.
i remember i had a pretty bad leak once on my 928. the top of the tank
has a twist cap. and it houses the fuelpump. it got lose somehow and thats
how it leaked. i saw that the tank of a 850 is similar (same?) .
yeah its the passenger side and front of rear tire....yeah i think something came loose....it all started after i drove it hard through the sepulveda pass...i think both of u guys might me right...im sure its a simple fix but not worth taking the risk of driving it 20 miles to my mechanic....thanks guys!

i saw that the fuel tank can be accessed by taking out thepassenger side of the rear seat.
i think, if you tighten no.7 you'll fix the leak (if i am right , that is).
or better yet get some gasket maker take off the lid
and make a little beat around the edge. screw the lid back on
problem fixed!!....i was a seal around the fuel pump that was put on incorrectly when it was last changed....i also got the motor mounts changed, put in a K&N filter, and other minor thing....cars runnin great....thanks guys.
Watch out with that K&N filter - it WILL damage your Mass Airflow Sensor. The oil on the filter collects on the MAF wire. You aren't getting any gain from using that filter. Use a good quality paper filter. Best one that isn't expensive is WIX.

As for the fuel pump, good call - but there is another common failure here. The top of the fuel pump carrier (#1 and #6 in the picture above) tends to leak at the electrical connector. The plastic gets old and brittle and the gas will weep out right at the electrical pins. Many have tried to glue with JB Weld and other epoxies, but the leak will ALWAYS return (happened to me too). Only remedy: replace the carrier assembly. GAULT BMW sells them for just under $500. Some used parts guys here have good units available also.

Racing Dynamics and Electrodyne have cold air pipes for an 8 banger that utilize what appears to be a K&N type filter. You don't recommend the "wet" filter is definitely what I'm hearing. Are these guys reputable or what?

no go on the "wet" filter. Personally learned that in the first weeks of ownership. The oil screwed up one of my MAFS. I use WIX air filters (use those for my Vette's too). I have an article somewhere that actually shows air flow values for the K&N's, as well as the level of filtration - not very flattering. When I find it, I will post it.

yeah i never liked those filters anyway.
is there a way to maintain the airflow sensors. maybe spray something on them?
answer is no. You don't want the wire coated with ANYTHING. It gets super heated for a split second to burn off any crud. They problem is if it gets coated with oil (from the air filter for example) it really shortens the lifespan of the wire itself.

I have a deal with a national electronics refurbishing company. I can get the 8 series (M70 only) MAFs rebuilt with a 1 year warranty for $185 each - far less than the $495 from BMW. Contact me if anyone is interested scs763@aol.com
