BMW actually built prototypes And there were conversions done in the US --This is one of the better ones that I have seen. nice....a yellow one would be the best.. I'm glad they didn't, it's nicer with a roof! I agree, Yuk! The nicest one i've seen is black with the top up but still YUK, IMO! I think the roofline of the 8 is one of the things I like best about it. I think hacking it off does it a disservice. agreed... the fact that the 8 has no B-pillar makes it feel very "open-air" to begin with, but if you really need to have it topless, it doesn't take much... Lol, That's not funny!!!-) Agree not funny at all I've never seen a pic of one of these weird convertibles with the top up. Can someone post a pic? by making the car a convertible, doesn't that ruin the structural integrity of the car? by making the car a convertible, doesn't that ruin the structural integrity of the car? the mercedes 500 sec series is an open coupe design as well and most of the structural members are in the lower part of the car. i would assume it's the same way with the 8 series Lets say that it Changes the structural rigidity. The top closes the box. Without the top you have to add sufficient rigidity to the bottom to make up for that loss. It is possible but rarely done well enough to make up the difference. BMW convertibles are rather rigid but still flex more than the coupe. The Mustang convertibles have aftermarket parts available to tie them together better underneath and the strut bars need to tie the strut towers together and to the firewall to reduce cowl shake. My '98 has the ties as factory but it will still twist under power. It was very doable back when cars had real frames under them but the modern unibody designs just don't have the meat to do it :( the nice pillarless design becomes a bog standard artifact if this car is made convertible. my 2 pence |
