I'm moving along with buying a whole lot of new parts for my hurt baby, right now. I found what looks like a sweet deal on a set of used rims that I though would fit, but the guy said it wouldn't fit my 94 840. The size is
18x8.5J 5x120 with a 40mm offset, 6.32 inch backspacing. Will it work?

NO, the offset (ET or backspace) is for a 3 series BMW. You need a 13-15mm offset for the front, and a 23-28mm offset on the rear (Depends on the actual width of the rim - 8", 8-1/2", 9" or 9-1/2")
