CAR House

Here's the "Beast". I bought it a few months ago and it is one of those cars that you guys try to put people off buying - cheap with lots of issues. I've not found anything very serious yet (touch wood) and i'm really enjoying fixing it up. I'll work on it for a few years and she'll be a beauty.

It's badged as a 850Ci, but in fact it's a plain old 1991 850i. One of the many previous owners tried to make it look like a newer model by rebadging and replacing the square exhaust tips with round ones. Unfortunately they hacked the old ones off and welded new tips on badly and they now look mis-aligned and crap. You'll also notice nice touches like the duct tape holding my headlight flaps in place. I have no idea how it happened but the headlight shells are broken and the clips at the front have snapped off. If I removed the tape the flaps would fly off at speed. This problem counts as cosmetic so is lower on the list than all the mechanical stuff I've got to do, but it is not cool to have duct tape on my pride and joy so I really should buy new lights.

I'm not liking the rear wing, it spoils the clean lines. I think it's a genuine "M" wing but it's way too Civic for me. I suspect it will make a horrible mess when I take it off so it's staying until I can do it properly. Does anyone else have one of these monstrosities?

nice car! the round tips were found on the 840's - the only thing your previous owner managed to do is hack up a nice looking exhaust...
The M5 wheels look nice too, but somehow they put the steering wheel on the wrong side... :)

exh is easy fix just tack on a new tailpipe or muffler... something a little bigger diameter. this looks too small for the 850 :-)
also the headlight - major issue ! get a nice used unit but I think you will have a tough time finding them ... UK, am I right ? since the wheels are on the wrong side :-)
so make sure the headlight is safe ! euro headlights can be serviced in parts and if the pleastic housing is all you need just get that from a dealer. The lid is held on with 1 single screw on the top rear section of the headlight bucket.
the tabs are for aligment and they are holding the front part on. You might actually need the lid ! are the tabs broken off of the lid or the headlight bucket is broken ?
have yet to see any of these failures...

I am in the UK and the wheel is definitely on the right side :cool. Looking at the mess the headlight casings are in I think someone vandalised the car and ripped the old flaps off. The previous owner just replaced the flaps and didn't bother doing a proper repair. The single screw at the back is there, but tabs at the front are not and the casings are cracked and broken in a few places. I do need new casings but I can't find used one anywhere. They are about $180 each from BMW but I've got bigger more expensive problems to sort out first. The duct tape is holding them on well but i'll be avoiding any high speed runs until they are fixed properly.
