Currently have a 04 X3 with the 17" wheels. I plan on buying some 19" wheels (19x8.5) with 38 offset to replace the stock ones. My question is about tires. I know that BMW stealership offers the staggered fitment of 235 in the front and 255 in the rear. I was just going buy my own 255/40/19 tires and put them all the way around and not do the staggered. Will the 255/40/19 tires fit in the front?? I'm not sure if there is some sort of fitment issues, and that's why BMW is offerent a smaller tire for the front.. Let me know if I can fit 255/40/19 front and back. Thank you!

BMW and other car companies sell cars with wider rear tires to put understeer in the cars. because drivers suck and understeer is the safer alternative and helps to keep people on the road.

equal tire width would help make the car handle neutral

Yes I know why they put bigger wheels in the back... my main question is that if its physically possible to put a wider tire (more than the stock 235) in the front. The front shock is awefully close to the tire now...

that has a lot to do with the offset of your new wheels.

you could possibly fit a much wider tire on your new wheels if they are closer to the fender

Little late to the game but the offset on the 17x7 wheels is 39. Offset on the 17x8 wheels is 46.

I'm also looking for new wheels. From what I'm finding out, a 255 tires is too wide for the front - it will rub on hard turns. The widest is a 245 tire depending on the offset.

Im also actually quite curious as to the fitment as i just saw in the local classifieds a set of pirelli winter tires however they are 285s and come on a set of 19' wheels off of a 4.4 X5.. i was wondering if these would fit in the back of my X3 as this deal is honestly too good to pass up
