Hi Fellaz,
I am wondering how easy is to do that .
One guy is selling '91 BMW850 for $2,5k . Not good condition though, engine has lost power, wirings are messed up, needs to be painted etc , etc ..
There is M52B28 engine also to be sold (from '97 328), with everything, alternator, wiring, etc .
850 is about 2 tons, 328 is about 1400-1500,
What you think, is it worth to buy those two and do the job ?
What are the most important parts which should be placed in the place of 850`s original parts ?
I dont want a rocket car, I like 850 very much though !
Please advice, I dont know much about 850, yet :)
Thanks in advance
Apart from the technical issues, you want to replace a 300hp / 450Nm V12 with a 190hp / 275Nm straight 6 engine? That's less than 2/3th on both the power and torque front. What kind of performance do you expect with this engine in an E31? You may not want a rocket car, but even an 850 in good shape isn't a rocket car. The heavy weight really demands an engine with high torque.
Do yourself a favor and look out for an 850 or 840 in better condition... Beware of cheap 8 series. The repairs can very rapidly turn into a bottomless pit.
..or spend another $2500 - $3000 for a good used V12 and drop it in...
REVTOR is correct though: buy cheap, dump ALOT of $$$ into it. Bottom line is that you will spend less buying a not-so-cheap 8.
that sounds like a high school type of question to me
Thanks for the answers,
I`m interested, will 328`s drive shaft fit or will need diff also to be changed and will they fit on E31?
Where can I found diagrams, service/repair manual of E31 please ?
What about the 328`s 5 speed transmission ?
I just want to know how possible it is technically and phisically , ok ?
Truly to say, if this 850 + fixing will go about $7-8k, I accept it, cant buy 840 or 850 for less than 12k in here .

People ask things because they would like to know, nobody has been born genius!
Pretty much NOTHING will be a direct fit and the wiring nightmare caused by the swap will definitely turn it into a parts car.
I once found a Maserati Biturbo with a 1800cc Toyota 4 grafted in. It was for sale for less than the value of the Toyota motor :rolleyes

it's like droping a dodge neon engine in a viper.
if you only owned a dodge neon , you have no clue what you're doing to the viper, by even thinking about it.
it's like blowing up a few baloons, thinking of flying to the moon.
it's even useless to ponder about.
Hello
The m52 is a smooth engine, i have a 2.8 in my e36 but compared to a 8 there is no where near enough Power or Torque.
The options you have are:
1. If you really want to go the six pot route then use a m3 engine with well over 300bhp.
2. A 400 bhp v8 e39 M5 engine.
3. The original V12 packs lots of Torque/Power and simplicity.
Finally forget the whole idea and buy yourself a good 850 and spend your knowledge money and efforts into restoring and mods.

Okay, the 8 series has what is known as a large case differential, the diffs from 3's, 5's, and non-M70 7's will NOT work. I doubt the driveshaft would work either. As for saying that spending $7000-$8000 is okay with you, you will be in for a rude awakening when you realize that number will be closer to $15,000 - $20,000.
a lot of the E30 guys have swapped to the M50 6cyl.
The M52 will be a nightmare to wire up, but if you MUST have a M52, convert it to OBD1.
intake, sensors, harness, ecu, coolant hose conversion
my e36 has a 3.2L from a 1999 that I converted to OBD1 1995 spec.
But installing a M52 in a E31 would not be worth the headaches...and if you are gonna pay someone else to do the swap, then I hope you have deep pockets (unlikely if you are buying a 2,500 e31)
Let me buy that 8 from you!
I want to install a 454 big block and powerglide instead!
giving it some more thought:
If you are good with a MIG or TIG welder, you can get 2 of those 2.8 straight sixes and weld them together at the crank - that would give you a 12 cylinder 5.6 engine (just like the CSi's have). Let us know how that works for you... :)
We must be bored.... I can't believe this thread has gotten as much press as it has... :rolleyes
So if you put this in basic math......And these numbers are figured when using weights configured with their original engines installed so the end result with the 2.8 engine in the e31 is going to be slightly off.
HP Ratings I got from autos.msn.com
The 328i weighs ~3340 @ 190hp = 17.5lb per hp
The 840i weighs ~4158 @ 282hp = 14.7lb per hp
5.4 V12 @ 322hp = 12.9lb per hp
So if you place a 190hp in a ~4158lb vehicle, you will be getting 21.9lb per hp
That's almost like a 518i!!
Not to mention the gas mileage you would get (if it could successfully be done), and the strain you would put on the engine because you are making it haul an additional 818lbs on a normal basis!!! As it's already been said by ELIBEEMER, Gr8White and Terry but the electrical issues you would run into while doing this project. But hey, if this is something you really want to do then more power to ya and good luck with the project. If you need the 8 series electrical manuals I can send them to you in .pdf.
Hey, what happened to the guy from Malaysia's project with the E30 with the M70 conversion?
Or was it an E34 with M70?
This isn't what you are talking about but it's kinda cool. From what I remember reading this is where they were testing the V12 for the 8 inside of a 6.

There was a thread on the old E24 6 series thread of a guy putting the M70 V12 into a 6 which should make it fly! TxGR8White, that would be a sight.:rolleyes
So, let me get this straight...
1) Buy a decent (not great, but driveable) 850 for $10-$12k
or:
2) Buy a junker 850 and a junker 328 for around $5k and drop another $15k to make all the parts work together to end up with something that would accelerate like my '65 Mini and would (maybe) be worth $2k (parts car) when you decide to sell it...
I've seen engine swaps to increase performance, but never the other way 'round...

That might have been me! I abandoned the V-12 in favor of the LS6 engine. over 100 HP more and lots left, LS6 weighs over 100 lb LESS then the V-12, for the puriest, that would have been good but for me, I couldn't justify the cost for the meager gain of torque of the V-12.

Sorry, couldn't figure how to us html picture.
Interesting stuff. I wish I could find the thread about the E34 (or E30) with the M70. There was even a video clip of the car, it sounded like the flaming hot fires of hell!

Thanks in advanceBuy the 850 and put a BEEFED Up 760 engine in it!

...and wind up spending $15,000 - $20,000 for that engine. Much better off getting forced air

I agree... I'm not even going to give a Yo on this one...
There is some interesting stuff, but it doesn't belong in this (I'll keep my opinion to myself) post.

I`d like a turboed 828i... check the FI section and the (rearwheel)power numbers there if you haven`t.
About wheter this could be done... there`s a e24 M70 and E30 M70 close to my town, so I think it could.
that still is no e31... the car is too heavy for a whimpey engine...
with or without turbo. this whole thing is pointless.
while it certainly wouldn`t be as nice and "right" as v12, something like 700 rwhp would be nice to have.
while it certainly wouldn`t be as nice and "right" as v12, something like 700 rwhp would be nice to have.
the engine just does not have the displacement to push a heavy car like that
a v12 will always be faster than your option.
i really don't understand why this is so confusing to some:eyecrazy
it is not the displacement that matters that much, it is the horsepower and torque.
If you can put a 700HP 4 cylinder in there, it will "push" a heavy car like that. What wil lhappen though, is that engine will NOT last that long.
A candle that burns twice as bright, only burns half as long...
Waxing philosophical Tx?
explaining things philosophically is the only way to go in this thread
in other words. Just say NO!! :D
