converting a dj-5 to 4x4
|
I am aquiring an old mail jeep. Its a DJ-5l built in 1983. The main purpose for this will be for delivering mail. I would like to convert it to 4x4. Here are the specs. 151 4cyl I believe it has the chrysler 904 automatic transmission. I think the DJ-5's use the same frame as the CJ-5's. I think the dana 300 transfer case will bolt up to the 904 transmission. If thats the case what front axle should I use? I am not sure of the gearing in the rear end. I would have to make them match. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. that sounds like you have A LOT of work ahead of ya... good luck ... let us know how it turns out. Yeah, good luck. I mean that. It sounds like more work than its worth, but... I used to own a '73 DJ5C and this guy at work always tried to convince me to convert it to 4wd, wouldn't be too hard, he'd always say. I just laughed at him. Unless you are getting a hell of a deal, it may be cheaper to convert a 4x4 jeep to right hand steer. Either way good luck! Post some pics if you get it. Try using the search function...a guy in my club did one for grins for a trail rig and I've posted pics and info here several times. The D300 will not bolt directly to the DJ's trans since it's a 2WD version. You'd need the tailshaft & tailhousing off of a Jeep 4WD 904/999 and you'd be more likely to find a whole trans than just those parts, so may as well just plan on swapping the trans. Best bet would be to find a cheap roached 80's CJ-7 with 4-banger and auto and grab the trans, t-case and axles out of it. Yeah, and along those same lines, would also be cheaper just to pull a Chebby V8 drivetrain. I mean, if you're going to go through the trouble to put in a front axle, why screw around with a 4cyl? Consider your project a frame, title, and possibly a rear axle, because that's pretty much all you're starting with. Shouldnt a new front axle just bolt on since this is a cj frame? I do agree with the chevy 350 and turbo 400 trans. What transfer case is used on the turbo 400 trans? I know you can bolt a d300 to a th 400...but that being said you can get an adapter to bolt pretty much anything you want to a th 400 ...np 203 np205...d20.... etc etc i dont think you can run a 904=300 combo in a cj5/dj5?? the rear shaft will be like 10 inches long......... |
