83 CJ 7 258 intake leak

I just replaced the intake and exhaust manifold. I had the one where the intake and exhaust bolted togeather. The exhaust was cracked. I replaced them with newer individual pieces. It will not idle and when I sprayed the intake with carb cleaner it reved up. Is there a trick to getting the intake to seal? The exhaust is fine.
I replaced my 84's exhaust manifold gasket this past summer. Keeping both the intake and exhaust gaskets in place while I got the manifold bolts started was a major PIA and cause me to no end of grief. Did you verify your gaskets didn't slip out of position when you tightened things up?

Also, since you had to replace your exhaust manifold, did you connect the EGR valve plumbing up correctly when you installed the manifolds? Did anything crack?
I just finished taking it apart and everything looked good. I will try new gaskets tomorrow.

Did you follow the tightening pattern? It is a spiral pattern starting with the top bolt just in front of the carb, then the top behind the carb, then down and back. The last ones to tighten are the ones bolting the intake and exhaust together.
I admit I did not follow it exactly. Now the major problem is I went to replace the gasket on the heat riser and broke the manifold. I have been searching for one and no luck in this area. I think I am going to have to go to ebay. thanks!
