Steering shaft for 76CJ... do it myself or pay?
|
At the place where my steering shaft attaches to the knuckle, the shaft broke loose when someone was trying to turn the tires with the Jeep sitting still. I kind of want to pay someone to do this because I am very discouraged Jeep-wise right now. The only shaft I can find is this one (http://www.quadratec.com/products/56113_01.htm) on Qtec for $200. I'm just looking for y'all's opinions. Should I try to do it myself? Anyone know where I can get a shaft for less than $200? $150 at 4wd.com http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?partID=8304 or $150 from ebay for a complete power steering setup. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-CJ-Power-Steering-Setup-Pump-Box-Shaft_W0QQitemZ320220324551QQcmdZViewItem?hash=ite m320220324551 That eBay setup looks rough. Is this a hard thing to fix? I have never fixed anything like that but I did buy a complete setup off of ebay and switch to p/s. You can spend a little more than that and get a really great Borgeson shaft. I bought one through Summit Racing for $229....Its alot more shaft for the money. Its really easy to remove since yours is already broke(I had to cut mine). There is a bolt where the shaft slides on the steering box and a bolt where it fastens to the upper shaft. These have to be completly removed before the shaft will come off. Spray each end w/JB Blaster and let soak for a little while. Take a hammer and LIGHTLY tap ends to "motivate" the ends if they dont want to slide off. Then replace in the reverse order...... If you CJ is power sttering I can give you mind for the cost of my time digging through the scrap heap plus shipping. Didn't think it was particularly sloppy when I removed it, just opted for a Flaming River shaft since I am replacing just about everything else anyways. Shoot me a PM. sanmiam - I appreciate it, but, since my whole steering assembly is in such crappy shape, I went with a new one. I already bought one used one and got the wrong one. Thanks very much for the offer though. I'm trying to decide whether to do this myself. If you've already got the shaft, it's not that big a deal to replace it. Especially if it's snapped. Collapse the new one, slide it in aligned, use some LocTite on the set screws...Drive on. What attaches the steering shaft to the top and bottom mounting points? On my Borgenson, it's a 'collar' with internal spines. You slip it onto the steering column and the steering gear box. Tighten the set screw and lock nuts. That easy, huh? I think I'll do that one myself. |
