I have a 1981 Scrambler and am interested in fixing it up a bit. I am wanting better performance out of the engine, and I am wondering if it would be better to get a newer engine (if so, what would be a good engine) or upgrade the current engine (v6 258). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Since you live in CA, you should look into what's legal and will pass smog.
In reality this all depends on your funding for the jeep. First on a CJ8 I would like to see a Chevy 350, second a AMC 4.0 (stroked) and coming in last I would do the 4.0 cylinderhead conversion. All add hp but the more $$$ you have the more hp you will get.
