How does that work? Can you still be in gear when you start? Can the starter get the engine to start when it's in gear and not clutched in?

Wow.. You are making me feel old.
Back in "the day", you could have the car in gear and try to turn it over. The car would jump forward (assuming it is in 1st gear) rather violently. It is really good for bumping yourself out of a really bad off road situation.

The same five-speed automatic is available on 4x4 FJ Cruisers, as is a six-speed manual that includes a clutch start cancel feature. This allows you to start the engine without depressing the clutch, which can be a lifesaver when you've stalled on a steep incline and would rather not dance between the brake and clutch pedal as the vehicle rolls uncontrollably down a hill.
