Home-Exhaust manifold carbon buildup

Exhaust manifold carbon buildup

My car is a '96 328is with about 92k miles. I was in the process of replacing the cat pipes today, and after I removed them, I noticed there was some amount of carbon (I presume) buildup in the exhaust manifold. It didnt seem excessive, but it was enough that I could scrape it away.
I just want to ask, does anyone know if its normal? And is there a way to clean it out? Well, without taking off the manifold and cleaning it by hand.

carbon? in an 92K mi exhaust manifold? unheard of! J/K

In all seriousness, nothing to worry about unless there is enough to clog the manifold like a blocked artery.

Thanks :D
