Home-A really basic question, checking oil

A really basic question, checking oil

When i check the oil when the car is still cool (but warmed up)... the level of oil is just right.

When i check the oil after the car has run for a while... the level is very high.

Am i missing something here?

well what type of oil are you using? Synthetic since it is a 2000?

Do you wait for the oil to settle, if you check it right after driving, the oil level will certainly be high, wait at least 2 minutes after the car has stopped .

Are you cleaning the dipstick off then resinserting it and getting the reading? If not, you're just reading where the oil sloshes around.

Run the car until it is at normal operating temp, then shut the engine off and let the oil settle for ~5 minutes. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, and THEN check the oil. That will give you a proper reading.

Yes absolutely, i do clean off the dipstick before i check the level :) .

Well i let the car warm up for 5-8mins... it reads half way between the marks. After ive driven around a while and shut the motor off, i check it again after a few minutes and it looks way high. I know its got to be off, because i did the oil change myself and only put 6.5L of castrol syntec. The fluid cap according to Bentley's for my car is 6.5-6.9L.

I think it may be due to the fact my dipstick is modified... its an Ess replacement dipstick, with an oil tap for the supercharger. I think this sorta throws off any accurate reading...
