Loose Steering (E36 M3)

I just got Ground Control coilovers and when I initially put it on (before alignment) the steering was very loose (could turn the wheel 10 degrees with no response). I think that was because the alignment was so off (toe in), but since I've gotten it realigned I still feel like the steering is more loose than it was before the suspension install. I'm running negative 3.5deg camber, 1/16" toe out, 7deg caster, and the ride height is at about 12.5" in the front. Any ideas?

Thanks

Did you look at your tie-rods?

No, I haven't yet. Anything in particular that I should look at/for?

any noise when turning steering wheel left and right?

One way to test the tie-rods (and ball joints) is to raise the front end of the car then grab ahold of the wheel at each side (3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions) and push the whell back and forth to see if there is any play.

You can check the ball joints by grabbing the wheel at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and doing the same. There shouldn't be much play either time. You can also look at the boots on the outer tie-rod ends for wear.

I have had a popping noise in the front while turning (intermittent sound). I had a shop take a quick look at it and they definitely determined that the sound is the front springs. Control arms are new btw.

So I take that you did the installation on the suspension stuff yourself.

Are you going to pay someone to fix it or are you going to go bak over your work?

A friend has GC coil overs on his M-Coupe. Occasionally when he turns the wheel, you hear the spring pop. The only solution we have found is to install a louder stereo.

He also has an adjustable sway bar, and the end links bind on a regular basis, causing more noise.

He also had a clearance problem which smashed the driver side rear brake line. He drove around for months wondering why his ABS suddenly started kicking in really early.

After helping him play with this suspension for the past year and a half, I have decided I am going to keep autocrossing in D-Stock instead of going to a Street Prepared class and screwing around with all of these suspension problems.

I'm gonna go back over it myself. I'll check everything how you mentioned earlier and if nothing looks wrong I'll probably take it to a shop. I'm wondering if they didn't do the alignment correctly if that would create this symptom. If they did toe in or no toe instead of 1/16" toe out (like I asked) do you think it might cause these symptoms.
